Although Alex Colville is by no means an abstractionist, his art tends to be so technically perfect and aesthetically distanced that it strikes the poet as leaving as much room for the viewer’s imagination as does that of the abstract painter. That is why Ledwell is so grateful to Colville’s art for inspiring, challenging, and freeing up his participating poetic imagination, thus enabling this collection.
