PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND MEMORIES
Non-fiction by Laurie Brinklow
Excerpt from the introduction, "The Fairest Land 'tis possible to
see...," from Prince Edward Island Memories
Prince Edward Island is perhaps best-known for its red soil
(resulting from the oxidized iron or rust content), its potatoes
(over 100,000 acres of production and a quarter of the total
annual farm receipts), its lobster (at one time used for
fertilizer and sure proof that you were poor if you took lobster
sandwiches in your lunch box and now fetching upwards of $8 a
pound in the grocery store), and Anne of Green Gables (a
spirited, red-haired orphan who has charmed generations of
readers around the world).
The Island works some sort of magic, making one want to set down
roots in its fertile soil and raise one's children in safety with
a quality of life that is hard to find elsewhere. Often called
Spud Island or the Garden of the Gulf, it is likened to a well-tended
garden, with its patchwork fields of bright reds and
greens against a backdrop of various shades of blue. Its sandy
shores and sandstone cliffs define it, giving it a beginning and
an end.
Island poet Milton Acorn said simply, Prince Edward Island is
"the wave lined edge of home."
Prince Edward Island Memories is the perfect
book for anyone interested in PEI food and PEI culture.
Charlottetown writer and editor -- and Acorn Press publisher --- Laurie Brinklow weaves the story of
Prince Edward Island with tasty tidbits about what makes this Island
such a special place. Park Corner's George Campbell and Ruth Hunter
have gathered 21 recipes from restaurants all across the Island,
representing a diversity of tastes and cultures. And former PEI
resident Hannelore Kennedy's soft watercolours capture Island scenes
and landmarks with a sense of nostalgia that makes you feel like
you've come home.
Recipes showcase the Island's world-famous oysters, lobster and
potatoes, and capitalize on the fact that we're as close as you can
get to where food is produced.
Prince Edward Island Memories was published by Travel Memories
Press in Indianapolis, Indiana, and is the brainchild of publishers
Ray and Ginny Berg. Over the past three years, similar-format books
have been published in Ireland, Nassau, Mackinac Island in Lake
Michigan, and New Orleans. Future titles include Toronto and Vancouver.
Prince Edward Island Memories is available in a hard cover edition,
and can be found in Island bookstores and gift shops.
