The Acorn Press

Established in 1994, the Acorn Press has a mandate to encourage the literary culture of Prince Edward Island by publishing “Books about Prince Edward Island by Prince Edward Islanders.”

We have a reputation for books of cultural and literary significance to Prince Edward Island, with several prize-winning titles.

We combine high editorial standards with design and printing to craft fine books of poetry, fiction, history, folklore, wellness and literature for children.

We partner with Nimbus Publishing (www.nimbus.ca) for distribution and our books can be found internationally and throughout Canada in local book shops.

Kira's Crossing

Five years had passed since Kira discovered that she was a mermaid adopted by a fisherman and his wife. Her birth parents were merrow royalty who had been imprisoned by their enemies, the shape shifting Finfolk. The Finfolk had also taken over Merhaven, the hereditary undersea home of the West Atlantic merrows. Encouraged by merrow clans and supported by the local fishing community, Kira decided to join a Merhaven recovery mission. Also volunteering for the operation was Janus, a mysterious, handsome young merrow from the North Sea, as well as several Spegars, large merrows from across the Atlantic, who hunted with spears. In the chaos that followed the mission, Kira found herself on an unexpected journey that would take her across the continent and a fight for her own survival.

Mi’kmaq Poetry from Prince Edward Island

The highly anticipated debut poetry collection of Mi’kmaq poems by Prince Edward Island’s Poet Laureate, Julie Pellisier-Lush.

This collection will enthral poetry lovers. Skilled at taking words from hearts and minds to paper, Julie’s poems will connect with the reader deeply. Some poems were created with teachings from our Elders and some were created to learn more about the art of words. At times heart wrenching and other times a call to action for Mother Earth, each poignant poem is paired with vivid artwork crafted by the poet herself. Take what you like, use what you need, most of all enjoy.

Mi'kmaq Campfire Stories of Prince Edward Island

The Mi’kmaq people have been here since the ice began to melt over this great land. They learned the medicines in nature to keep them healthy and they hunted the animals of the land and fished the waters of the sea. During the summer months they would gather in large community groups to celebrate, dance and sing. When the cold winds started to blow, they would go off in their own little family units to survive the winter. Here we present to you just a couple of those stories that were passed down from generation to generation. Hear them, learn from them, experience them, but most of all enjoy them!

Broken Crayons

When Ms. Gillis, a preservice teacher on Prince Edward Island, decides to complete her International Teaching Practicum in Kenya, sponsored by Farmers Helping Farmers, she is very excited. She can’t wait to start her adventure in the warm African sun, leaving behind cold February days in Canada and (as she comes to learn) a well-stocked Island classroom. Farmers Helping Farmers is a not for profit organization based on Prince Edward Island Canada which helps build sustainable agriculture communities in Kenya.
