DIP & VEER: REFLECTIONS ON THE ART OF ALEX
COLVILLE
Poetry by Frank Ledwell
"Ledwell's title is the 'dip and veer' of his
poem 'One Swallow,' the Romantic poets' harbinger of spring -- an
apt phrase, for that is how his collection moves, through a versatile
register from tragic realities and sombre meditation to whimsical,
self-mocking humour and the vital capacity for love."
-- Michael Thorpe, Atlantic Books
Today
Although Alex Colville is by no means an abstractionist, his art
tends to be so technically perfect and aesthetically distanced that
it strikes the poet as leaving as much room for the viewer's imagination
as does that of the abstract painter. That is why Ledwell is so
grateful to Colville's art for inspiring, challenging, and freeing
up his participating poetic imagination, thus enabling this collection.
