EXCERPT FROM HER TEETH
ARE STONES
Poetry by Judy Gaudet
Invocation at Wolfe Island
“But still I know that life is for delight.”
-- D. H. Lawrence
from inside this blue room I hear
the boys leaping from the ferry dock,
the wind in the leaves over the lake, I see
shadows from the tree moving over stones,
over the tinkling key of a boat’s mast,
a white butterfly’s passing
an old book of poetry invokes
the spirit of invoking,
after Lawrence wrote, after Tom read,
after their transient mutual delight,
oh shadows of dark wind
over the light haze of water!
oh crow’s voice shushed by the tree’s command!
oh wishing leaves, whoosh, buzz
of flies coming through open doors
and going out again!
oh life that goes on, carrying so much,
uncountable in the time that brings it --
life coming in on a breeze,
on a wave, on a voice over water,
on a mosquito’s wing, a swallow’s pursuit,
life looking out and looking in,
here is a soft stirring of spirit, response,
repose, shush, shush,
here are the million gifts of this single now.
