AN EXCERPT FROM LONG
REACH HOME
Poetry by Dianne Hicks Morrow
Poplar Leaf Rustle
kept me awake
living alone
in my first garret,
yellow lichen trunks
bright against the grey harbour
in drab November.
When the muttering leaves
let go,
I wrote poetry there.
Now I live in the country.
Balm of Gilead poplars
whisper behind this house,
replace twenty years of kidnoise.
Outside the upstairs window
I see crooked trunks
growing their first
yellow lichens.
Leaves ready
to let go.
