On December 5, 2002, the Prince Edward Island government
announced in the Legislature that Dr. John Smith had been appointed
the Island's first Poet Laureate for a two-year term.
During his term, John travelled the Island, hosting
readings and lectures about poetry throughout the ages, celebrating
the poetic form, and raising public awareness of poetry and of the
spoken word.
Professor Emeritus at the University of Prince Edward
Island, John Smith was a much-respected and much-loved professor
of English for 30 years, whose gift of being able to bring literature
alive touched hundreds of students, many of whom have since gone
on to become some of the Island's finest writers.
His most recent books include Maps of Invariance
(2005), Strands the Length of the Wind (1993) and Midnight
Found You Dancing (1986). John Smith lives in Charlottetown
